Local dental schools typically have discounted fees for people who are not insured.

If you do not have dental insurance, you may select from two types of plans: HMO (also called DHMO) or PPO (DPPO).

  • HMO / DMO plans: Only cover preventive services such as cleanings, exams, and x-rays. Everything else will be on a discounted fee schedule. You will have to choose one provider from the network list provided by your insurance company.
  • PPO / DPPO plans: You can choose your own dentist within the network or out-of-network. Typically plans cover preventive services at 100%, minor services (fillings) at 80%, and major services (crowns) at 50%. This may vary per plan and we recommend you to search through to see what fits best for you. Many individual plans do not cover implants, if you are looking for implant coverage, you must check for implant coverage within the plan. There also may be a clause that prevents coverage on that specific tooth, if the tooth was missing or extracted prior to the effective dates.

There are pros and cons for HMO and PPO plans. Typically HMO plans are more affordable, however, you are limited to the dentists within the network so specialist may not be in convenient locations. We prefer PPO plans due to its flexibility. The most popular dental plan in the Bay Area are: Delta Dental, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield, and Metlife.
